Let's step Back: Consider Where We Are, Where Do We Go From Here?

Here are seven events from the last week in February 2026. They are the events that I think are the most impactful for the future of humanity. They fall into two categories: Artificial Intelligence and Violence. In the comments, please share what you see as history making events in February. The use of technology for the dehumanization of humanity Friday, February 27: The Trump administration revealed that they want to have AI to use for the surveillance of American citizens. They also want to use AI in military in military weapons that decide to kill people without people making the decision. This lead AI firm Anthropic to publicly state that they will not participate in developing AI for the surveillance of Americans or autonomous decisions about killing people. Friday, February 27: Trump cancels all government contracts with Anthropic. He also says that he will punish any company that uses Anthropic’s products. Friday, February 27: OpenAI’s, president announced that he will take over providing the administration’s AI needs. Publicly he says he doesn’t see a conflict with providing top secret resources to the administration while not participating in surveillance or AI directed killing. (This is obviously an impossible task) It is a good return on investment for Sam Altman. He donated $1 million to Trump’s inauguration fund and attended the inauguration. He has dined with Trump at Mar-a-Lago and donated millions of dollars to MAGA Inc., a pro-Trump super PAC. A Pandemic of Violence Tuesday, February 24: In a drone attack Democratic Republic of Congo killed Willy Ngoma, a spokesperson for M23 rebels in violation of a ceasefire. This is a symptom of violence in other African nations. Wednesday, February 25: Mexican security forces kill “El Mencho”, the leader of a crime cartel. This triggered wide-spread street violence in cities across western Mexico. Wednesday, February 25: After the bombing of a mosque in Islamabad, Pakistan initiated massive airstrikes on Kabul and Kandahar. Friday, February 27: The United States Military initiated a massive attack on Iran. They were joined by Israel. Iran responded with missile attacks on Israel and military bases throughout the Middle East. An Initial Observation Increasing numbers of Americans are recognizing the threat posed by the Republican party and the years of complaisance of the Democratic party. Critical issues have not been addressed, disparity of wealth and income, climate change and environmental degradation, the lack of international institutions ability to protect vulnerable people, tribes, and nations, and the disappearance of accountability of the American government and governments around the world to citizens. As March begins, the question is: “How can individuals participate in the project of taking back the ‘arc of history’ as it strains to bend and destroy the “arc of the moral universe”? What do you think is the greatest danger facing humanity? What are strategies for global citizens?
